Sun Wukong Poster
Design students had to find a topic to create a historically/scientifically accurate an informed illustration. After picking a topic and presenting a mood board students then hand to utilize the proto-photo method to refine a build the illustration. This method involved drawing on a piece of paper physically then scanning it in and printing it out to create a more refined sketch on top. These steps were repeated several times to create a more refined sketch with value and texture. After the final sketch was scanned in the rest of the piece was colored and painted digitally using Photoshop.
Research
For this project, I wanted to inform my drawing with the research of ancient Chinese illustration and literature. Specifically, the scene this poster depicts is from the classical Chinese mythological novel, Journey to the West. In this scene, the character Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, is placed in a furnace for 49 days. This was done by Laozi to get rid of the Monkey King’s immortality. After the 49 days were up all the furnace did was burn Sun Wukong’s eyes and make them permanently red. The visual style within the illustration is a stylized form of traditional Chinese woodblock printing.
